Seasonal sales

Some companies make most of their money in one part of the year or around a specific date. Such companies with seasonal sales and profits will tend to put the worst part of the year into the first half, so they can always hold out the hope of better things to come if early sales slump.

Many obvious examples spring to mind.

Despite the popularity of winter sports among those who can keep their balance on the piste, holiday companies sell the overwhelming majority of their deals for the summer season. It is hard to think of a holiday provider that does not make a loss every winter.

The following table shows the difference between first half trading to March 31 and second half trading to September 30 for holiday company Thomas Cook in 2016–17. Figures in brackets are losses.
